- Aquatic Plants
- Overview
- Aquatic plants are plants that have adapted to living in aquatic environments. They are also referred to as hydrophytes or macrophytes. These plants require special adaptations for living submerged in water, or at the water's surface. Aquatic plants enhance the beauty of your pond or water garden while oxygenating water and removing naturally occurring organics. Below are some websites that focus on aquatic plants, their identification, care of and where to purchase in the Pacific Northwest.
- Identification of aquatic plants
- Not all aquatic
plants are created
equally. While the
plant may be
beautiful, it could
also be hazardous to
the environment.
Make sure you know
which plants are
considered
non-invasive in your
area. The following
websites we found
very helpful in the
identification of
aquatic plants:
* Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service - provides an alphabetical index, colored picture of each plant, the common and scientic names, and description of the plant and whether or not the plant is non-native.
*Department of Ecology, State of Washington - provides an alphabetical index of the scientic name of each plant. It requires more "clicks" in order to see the description and another "click" to see a picture of the plant. They also provide a link to invasive non-native plants in the state of Washington.
*State of Idaho Agriculture - provides a list of Idaho's 64 noxious weeds and it includes water hyacinths! - Washington aquatic plant suppliers
